Mommaprenuer: Dawn Marie Dillon, Breathless Beauty

by Cafe Handmade on July 2, 2010

Tell us about yourself: I am a mama of 4 great children and a wife to an awesome renovation specialist. While exploring my love for crafting I started my career path in the cosmetology feild in NYC then I moved on to creating wonderful artisan cakes as a pastry chef. Being that I love to learn new things I moved on and learned sewing, knitting, crocheting, jewelery making paper making and finally soap and bath products.

How did you make the decision to pursue your art career and work from home? With small children my youngest being 8 and 1 year I needed to be present for these very vulnerable years of their lives and not just send them to sitters for their upbringing during the working hours!

How do you balance work and family? That is a tough one but all I can say is create a schedule and hope the littlest member of the family adheres to it!

If you could go back in time to the beginning stages of your venture, what advice would you give yourself? I think I should have marketed more from the beginning instead of trying to do it all at this juncture.

Tell us about your average day: I do not have an average day as my 1 year old dictates what and when, but usually its get the 8 year old ready for school and bring her to the bus then feed the one year old and prepare orders, check inventory, check and answer emails, publish blog post, check website reports, make product if needed, promote on twitter, somewhere in between lunch for baby, pick up my daughter from the bus, do homework, dinner prep and then some researching and reading then bed time routine. As my husband travels to and from I also have to fit in some things he needs from me and his dinner and some good reasoning time!

What do you love most about owning and operating your own creative business? I can control everything that is done and that goes into all my products!

Besides your work and family, what else do you enjoy doing? I love water so walks at the break of beaches or lakes, fishing for fun not to eat, playing scrabble and reading a wide array of books.

Why buy handmade? Consumers will get quality and hard work not machine made things that are all the same and not unique. You are also supporting artists and their family’s instead of CEO’s of major corps that do not need another dollar!

Marvelous Mom Weekly - Dawn - Simply Breathless

Being a mom is not an easy job.  Between the kids, the husband, the house chores and for some of us, the job outside the house, do you remember to take care of yourself? With summer fast approaching it is more important than ever to give your skin and body the best treatments you can get. And you can get it from our marvelous mom this week, Dawn, the owner of Simply Breathless Natural Healthy Beauty (http://simplybreathless.etsy.com/).

Below is a little more about Dawn, her family and her shop!

The family:

I am a Mama to 4 great beautiful children , Friend, Boo Boo kisser, Wife, Sargent and lover of life and Earth!

The Talents:
My blessings are so abundant and rich. I have been afforded talents beyond my wildest dreams and have achieved so much within the past 11 years. Guidance has brought me to the place I am now and I prosper each and everyday.

I Started my career as a Hairdresser in NYC then furthered my studies to become a Pastry Chef! That not being enough for me I had taken on crafting in general and learned the skills I carry today for my knitting, crocheting, sewing, papermaking , jewelry making and Breathless Beauty's Bath and Body Care Line!

The Shop:
Breathless Beauty's journey has always been a passion driven one as many things we use and love for our body are made with so many chemicals and unhealthy ingredients. Many long hours of chemistry classes, saponification tables and values, reading soap crafting books non stop and lots and lots of trial and error has brought me to soap and bath and body product crafting.

I want to bring hand crafted back to a society where commercial mass production has become the norm, by providing all my natural bath and body care and artisan works affordably to each and every person I can.

MOMMY OF ONE AND COUNTING BLOG REVIEW!

http://heatherandavery.blogspot.com/2010/04/breathless-beauty-review-giveaway.html

I like bath and body items. I like the smell they give off and I like smelling good, as anyone does ( I hope?).

Breathless Beauty sent me a Sweetness Shea Souffle and a Sweetness and Oats soap. I like the Smell of the Sweetness. It's so nice and isn't too strong. I don't like products that are TOO strong, but have a nice smell to them.

The souffle felt real soft and smooth on my hands, it was a little oily at first, but I dabbed off some of the excess and it was still enough to soak in and give me a good soft hand. I think if I was sleeping at night though I would leave it all on, but for me to come out here on the computer and stuff it was better to get off the excess.

The soap is very nice as well. It's nice and soft, again not too strong and is very nice. It's strong while in the shower, but isn't nearly as strong once you get out and I like that!! It definitely cleaned well and it rinsed off well. There was no residue left behind!

Price: The Souffle is $8 which is AWESOME! And the soaps are $4.50!
Overall: **** Very happy with this company and it's an Etsy store so it's supporting a Work At Home Mom!! Which is great!
